May 2018

Dear Oil Lover,
Relaxing into May
Just when I was beginning to fear that the rain would never cease and the temperature would never rise, May came along and hit me full force in the face. Thank you May! And to add to my general sense of wellbeing, I was very fortunate to spend last week in Mallorca at Fran Stockley's Bodylove Retreat: a wonderful environment with daily yoga (with @emma_twydell), raw food and workshops on improving health and happiness.
Testing Times
For many students, relaxing at a Mallorcan Retreat is a far cry from their current predicament. I remember all too well planning revision timetables with enthusiasm and trying to cram as much information into my head as possible before the exam nerves kicked-in. If only I'd known about the benefits of using essential oils all of those (ahem) years ago.

What oils can assist with revision and sitting exams? There are many, but my favourite combinations are:

Peppermint and Wild Orange - my absolute go-to oils for improving focus and concentration. I use these daily - often when I'm having a slump in the afternoon. Peppermint, the "Oil of a Buoyant Heart" (!) is very refreshing and makes your skin tingle (don't go overboard with it). Wild Orange, the "Oil of Abundance" is uplifting, helps improve concentration and relieves anxiety.

Lemon and Rosemary - Lemon is the "Oil of Focus" and its delightful citrusy aroma nourishes the mind and aids concentration. Rosemary is the "Oil of Knowledge and Transition" which supports memory and alleviates nervousness.
Usage: Place a drop of each oil (Peppermint and Wild Orange or Lemon and Rosemary) into the palm of your hands and rub them together. Cup your hands over you nose and mouth and inhale the aroma through your nose. Repeat a few times and then rub your hands over the back of your neck and upper shoulders to disperse the oils. Aaaaaaaand - FOCUS!

Remember: I am only advocating the use of dōTERRA oils because I know that they are pure, natural and potent.

Caution: You should avoid direct sunlight on any part of your body where you have applied citrus oils topically as it may cause photosensitivity.

Be Adventurous! These oil combinations are great for students but can also be integrated into work life.

Tried and Tested with Sylvia
Sylvia here! Last month I tried an oven cleaner paste made with dōTERRA's Lemon oil to clean my rather messy oven. Not a chore that’s high on my list of favourite kitchen jobs, but a necessary one at that.

This is the recipe I used:

250ml (8oz) of bicarbonate of soda
125ml (4 fluid oz) of water
1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid
10 drops of dōTERRA Lemon oil

Combine the ingredients in a bowl to form a paste. Apply with a sponge and let sit for up to 30 minutes. Wipe off with a clean cloth or sponge and water.

How did the cleaning go? Well, the mixing together of the ingredients made a rather watery paste which was difficult to apply. Initially, I left it on for 30 minutes with little effect, so I decided instead to leave it for three hours. Cleaning it off with a sponge was also very messy. On the plus side, the smell of Lemon was fresh and clean and I know I was not inhaling toxic chemical fumes. Some of the grime and grease had been removed but not as much as I would have liked. I will add less water next time and leave it on overnight. Rina can come down and help me with it!

See the before and after photos below - I have added them more for amusement value than anything else. It just goes to show that not every experiment can be success, right? I am hoping for more joy with the dishwasher tablets I will be trialing later this month!
