February 2019

Cleanse and Restore
January is out of the way and, for once, I am not disappointed with myself for having given up on one (or more) of my New Year's Resolutions already. There is a simple reason for this. I didn't make any! Instead, I have committed to making small changes throughout the year in an attempt to improve my health and wellbeing.

I started with a 30-day renewing cleanse. Every day, I took dōTERRA's Lifelong Vitality supplements: that's three different supplements. (Microplex VMz Food Nutrient ComplexxEO Mega; and Alpha CRS Cellular Vitality Complex). I took them twice daily and definitely felt that my overall energy levels were increased which was most welcome during a particularly long and dark month!

For the first ten days of the cleanse I also took GX Assist capsules three times a day with food and really noticed that my digestive system was working efficiently (if you get my meaning). I felt that my gut was getting a good detox! I then moved on to PB Assist+ and took one capsule twice a day, with food. This supplement is designed to encourage the replenishment of friendly microflora population. I would be telling porkies if I said that I actively felt this supplement working in my body in the physical sense. But, it felt good to know that I was giving my GI tract lots of good bacteria (having flushed out the bad with the GX Assist) and that made me feel better in myself.

I also made sure that I drank lots of water to hydrate and detoxify my body. I used a variety of oils in my water to help with the cleansing process: Lemon, LimeGrapefruit, and Zendocrine mainly.

All in all, I really enjoyed the renewing cleanse and found it easy to stick to (it's just taking supplements with food and putting oil in water, right?!) I will be continuing to take the Lifelong Vitality supplements daily as well as adding oils to my water. Taking the GX Assist and PB Assist+ is something I will probably repeat every other month, unless I notice that my body misses it (in which case I'll repeat the process sooner).

Juicing and Meditating

Alongside taking daily supplements and drinking lots of water, for the first 21 days of January, I took part in a 21-Day Juicing Challenge. This Challenge was set up by Steph Magenta (a friend and a juicing Guru) on Facebook and it required one commitment only - to have a fresh juice every day for three weeks. This was not a meal-replacement plan nor a diet; just a commitment to getting oodles of nutritious goodness into the body on a daily basis in the form of fresh juice.

I dusted off my juicer (why did I only use it in the warmer months?!) and got to work. I made juices from all kinds of fruit and vegetable combinations. Some combinations were ah-maze-ing and some were, well, less so. I usually juiced first thing in the morning and drank it on an empty stomach. The greatest revelation for me was discovering that if I strained the juice after it was made and before I drank it, there was a velvety smoothness to it - delicious!

Perhaps my favourite juice so far is a combination of Orange, Carrot, Sweet Potato (who would have thought?!), Ginger, Lemongrass and Turmeric (my new love). This combination of fresh ingredients makes a wonderfully zingy juice that will start kick-start your body and mind on even the coldest and gloomiest of mornings.

I also experimented with using oils in my juices. It would be rude not to! I made juices with a variety of oils including Basil, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime, Lemongrass, and Ginger. There was no need to juice the oils themselves and so I just added them at the straining phase. One drop was plenty! Ideally, I think it's preferable that all of the ingredients in the juice are fresh but having a stash of oils was really handy for when I ran out of lemons or ginger, for example.

Spinach, Celery, Pineapple, Kiwi and Apple Juice with a drop of Lemon oil.

The community Steph created on Facebook was great - social media at its very best! I loved reading other people's posts (people I'd never met) about what they were juicing that day, how it made them feel, what recipes they were going to try next...

I'm so pleased that I got involved in this Challenge firstly because I LOVED it and secondly because I have formed a habit that I can be proud of (at last!). I have continued with my daily juicing and intend to do so for the foreseeable future.

Luckily, Steph didn't just leave us high and dry after our 21-Day Juicing Challenge. Rather, the Facebook Group has morphed into the 21-Day Chill Out Challenge. This means that I am meditating every day for 10-15 minutes. I can honestly say that I have never focussed on meditation with intent before nor have I attempted to find time in each day to do so. I have to admit to sometimes finding it difficult to focus on meditating (so much buzzing in my head!) but I am really enjoying it. Creating some headspace at the beginning of my day has brought me a sense of calm and perspective. Thank you for all of your inspiration, Steph!

Tried and Tested with Sylvia
I am a lucky girl because I spent the majority of January in Spain with Mike looking after our friends’ dog whilst they went on holiday. Before leaving, I made sure to pack my dōTERRA essential oils and roller bottles but sadly I forgot to pack my diffuser! Worry not, my sister-in-law Julia came up with a great idea when she visited us. She half-filled a frying pan with water, added a few drops each of Lavender and Eucalyptus and simmered gently as the scent filled the flat - it worked a treat!
I have also been testing my Post-Workout Rub (see January's Tried and Tested for the recipe) and trying to keep up with my New Year’s resolution to exercise more. I have been averaging a 4-5 mile walk every day and finding that my muscles are quite sore when I get back. Before going to bed, I used the Rub on my hip and spine and was able to sleep comfortably and get relief from the muscle-ache.
Enjoying a walk along the seafront in Sitges.
Other ways that we have experimented with our oils whilst we were away and that you, too, could try are:

Add a drop of Lemon and Wild Orange to a gin cocktail (yum).

Add a drop of Lime and Coriander to salads (delish).

Apply Melaleuca to help relieve sore areas on tired feet.

Rub Zengest to the cheekbones to alleviate blocked sinuses.

As well as forgetting to pack my diffuser, I also forgot to pack my perfume! Instead, I wore Passion (on offer this month) and Motivate as a fragrance.  I’m so thankful that I can rely on my oils at all times!
